Ilhan Basgoz is the student of Pertev Naili Boratav, who introduced folklore to Turkey as an independent scientific discipline. Basgoz, Professor Emeritus of Folklore and Central Eurasian Studies and the founder of the Turkish Studies Program at Indiana University, is one of the first names encountered when one intends to do research on Turkish folklore. His handsome volume, Turkish Folklore and Oral Literature, is a welcome addition to the study of Turkish folklore and oral literature.

İlhan Başgöz (d. 1921, Sivas). Folklor araştırmacısı, yazar. Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi'nin Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü'nde okudu. Aynı yerde asistanlık yaptı, doktora yaptı. Sonra oradaki görevinden uzaklaştırıldı ve Tokat Lisesi'nde öğretmenlik yaptı. Ocak 1953'te Türk Ceza Kanunu'nun özellikle solcuların o dönemde hapse düşmesine neden olan 141. maddesine aykırılıktan dolayı tutuklandı ve iki yıl hapiste yattı. 1960'ta ABD'ye gitti. Indiana Üniversitesi'nde öğretim üyesi oldu. Türk folklörüyle ilgili çalışmalarıyla tanınmaktadır. Zaman zaman Cumhuriyet Gazetesi'nde ve Radikal Gazetesi'nde yazıları yayımlanmaktadır. Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı öğretim üyesidir.
